The friendly follow-up text that patients actually answer

One warm message, sent the same day, with a 20-second link. That’s the whole trick.

Better Reviews team · August 2026

The follow-up text patients actually answer is short, friendly, sent the same day as their visit, and asks for one thing that takes 20 seconds. Get those four elements right and the message feels like your practice being attentive; get them wrong and it feels like marketing – and marketing gets deleted.

The anatomy of a text that gets answered

Copy-paste wording

Adapt the practice name and send as-is:

Notice the phrase “good or bad”. It isn’t decoration – inviting criticism is what separates a genuine feedback request from review-fishing, and it is what makes replying feel safe for the patient who had a mediocre morning.

Where the link should go

Not straight to a wall of Google login screens. The link should open a fast rating page on your own domain: the patient taps 1–5 stars as private feedback, then every patient sees the same two options – write a Google review or send a private message – and low ratings alert the practice manager straight away. The happy patient posts while the goodwill is warm; the unhappy one overwhelmingly chooses the private route and reaches you the same afternoon instead of Google at midnight. Those public reviews carry real weight: 76% of consumers regularly read online reviews for local businesses and 46% trust them as much as recommendations from friends and family (BrightLocal 2023) – and 71% of patients check reviews as the first step in finding a new doctor (Software Advice).

The mistakes that get texts ignored

How to know it’s working

You don’t need a dashboard to judge this – your Google page is the dashboard. Count the reviews you had the day you switched the text on, then look again a month later. Most practices see the difference within weeks, because the text reaches every patient on the one device they certainly have, hours after the one experience they certainly remember. Compare that with the verbal ask at the desk, which reaches whoever the least busy receptionist happened to see, on the days anyone remembered at all.

Keep it proper

Use your existing appointment-messaging channel, honour opt-outs, and keep the message about the visit that just happened – a service message asking how you did, not a promotion. Say nothing clinical in the text, and collect nothing clinical on the page. Once it is wired into the messages your system already sends, the friendly follow-up text becomes the most reliable review engine a practice can own: automatic, welcome, and answered – one visit, one message, one tap at a time.
