The boring Google Business Profile checklist that outranks flashy websites

Patients don’t find you through your website. They find you through the box beside the map.

A boring Google Business Profile checklist – correct hours, right categories, real photos, answered reviews – will do more for how patients find you than a flashy website ever will, because when someone searches “dentist near me” or your practice name, Google shows your profile beside the map before anyone reaches a website at all. The practice with the complete, accurate, well-reviewed profile wins that moment, whatever its website cost.

Why the boring profile beats the flashy site

The profile is the front door now. It shows your stars, your hours, your phone number and your photos on the search page itself – and reviews are a large part of what patients judge there. 71% of patients check online reviews as the first step in finding a new doctor (Software Advice), and since NHS.uk closed its public star-ratings in 2025, Google is the main public rating left for UK practices. A beautiful website that patients never reach loses to a tidy profile they see instantly.

The checklist

Work through these ten items once, then re-check quarterly. None takes more than a few minutes, and most practices can clear the lot in a single quiet afternoon.

The item that isn’t a one-off

Nine of the ten are set-and-forget. The tenth – fresh reviews – needs a system, not a memory. The simplest one: a short “Review us” link on your own domain, added once to your appointment texts, email signature and a reception QR poster. Behind it, a rating page asks patients to tap 1–5 stars as your own private feedback; every patient then sees the same two options – write a Google review or send private feedback – and low ratings alert the manager instantly. Reviews arrive weekly; problems arrive privately, while they can still be fixed.

What to leave off the checklist

Never buy reviews, never offer incentives for them, and never gate who can reach Google by rating – all of it breaches Google’s policies, and profiles have had review sections purged for less. Under the UK’s Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act – in force for reviews since April 2025, with CMA guidance in CMA208 – hiding negative reviews or selectively soliciting positive ones is a banned practice in its own right, not just a Google-policy issue. The boring checklist wins precisely because it is honest: accurate information, real photos, genuine reviews, polite replies. Boring, it turns out, is what trustworthy looks like on a search page.

We’ll handle the reviews line on the checklist

Better Reviews builds and hosts your “Review us” page, wires it to your Google review box, and sends every piece of private feedback straight to the manager.
