How to get found on Google without a website rebuild

For “near me” searches, your Google Business Profile does the heavy lifting – not your website. Complete it, feed it reviews, keep it consistent.

You can get found on Google without a website rebuild, because for local searches like “dentist near me” or “physio [town]” it is your Google Business Profile – not your website – that decides whether you appear. The map results sit above the ordinary listings, and they are ranked on your profile’s completeness, reviews and consistency. All of that can be improved this month with a login and a spare hour, while your existing website stays exactly as it is.

Where local patients actually find you

When someone searches for a practice nearby, Google shows a map with three businesses before any website link. Patients tap one of those three, skim the rating and reviews, and ring the number – often without ever visiting a website. That is why a dated website matters less than practice owners fear, and an unloved Business Profile matters far more. The reviews on that profile are the first thing checked: 71% of patients check online reviews as the first step in finding a new doctor (Software Advice). Your website can wait; your profile cannot.

Fix 1: claim and complete the profile (one hour, once)

Fix 2: reviews – the ranking signal you can grow every week

Reviews influence both where you rank in the map results and whether the person who sees you taps you. With NHS.uk having closed its public star-ratings in 2025, Google is now the main public rating for a UK practice, and 76% of consumers regularly read reviews for local businesses (BrightLocal 2023). The practices that dominate local results are almost always the ones with steady, recent reviews – which comes from asking, not from luck.

Ask every patient through channels you already have: a text after the appointment (“Thanks for visiting [practice name]. If you have 20 seconds, we’d value your feedback: [link]”), a line in your email footer, a QR poster by the door. Two bright lines: never offer any incentive for a review, and never filter the ask to happy patients only – both breach Google’s review policy and risk the very profile you’re building.

Fix 3: consistency across the web

Google cross-checks your name, address and phone number against other directories – NHS listings, CQC, Yell, healthcare directories. Mismatches (an old address on one, a former phone number on another) quietly erode its confidence in showing you. Spend thirty minutes searching your own practice name and correcting stragglers. No developer required – just logins and patience.

Fix 4: show signs of life

An active profile beats a static one. Reply to reviews – businesses that respond are seen as 1.7× more trustworthy (Google/Ipsos) – answer the public Q&A on your listing before a stranger does, and post occasional updates (new clinician, extended hours, holiday opening). Ten minutes a week is plenty.

When a website rebuild is worth it – later

A modern website helps with conversion and with searches beyond your immediate area, and one day it may earn its price. But it is step five, not step one. Profile completeness, steady reviews, consistent details and visible activity deliver most of the “get found” result – for the cost of a few focused hours.

The reviews part, handled for you

Better Reviews keeps honest feedback flowing to your profile – every patient rates you privately, then chooses between a Google review and private feedback, and low scores alert your manager instantly.
